*The Ridotto, the world's first casino, opened in 1638 and was a famous venue for gaming, where, in the libertine and euphoric atmosphere of the 18th century, Italian and foreign princes and nobles, 'protected by the mandatory mask' required for entry, squandered their fortunes. Giacomo Casanova, a regular visitor, considered it the perfect stage for his romantic pursuits. Today, the historic halls of the Ridotto are part of the architectural complex of the Hotel Monaco & Grand Canal, overlooking the Grand Canal
